The Banking on Your Future program, administered
by the Mississippi Young Bankers, provides education on personal finance to thousands of
Mississippi students each year. The program provides course materials to
teachers and brings bankers into the classroom to provide first-hand
information. It has been endorsed by Mississippi Superintendent of
Education, and has reached more than 78,000 students
since it began in 1998.
The Banking on Your Future program is targeted towards
schoolchildren in grades 7-12. It consists of three publications: the Banking
on Your Future student manual, workbook and teachers’ manual. The
materials discuss the phases of one’s life and the financial services
that are important during each phase – taking students from a child’s
first savings account all the way to a senior citizen’s retirement
account. Students are taught how to write checks, reconcile statements,
manage credit and dozens of other useful skills.
Mississippi banks purchase these textbooks from
the MBA, then donate them to schools in
their area -- at no cost to the schools. Then, bankers assist the teachers
by making presentations to students and by answering students’
questions.
The Mississippi Bankers Association has administered a
student educational program continuously since 1966. Banking on Your
Future is a successor program to the How and Why of Banking
program (1973-1998) and the Your Mississippi Banks program
(1966-1973).
The program consists of three pieces - the student
manual, teachers' manual and practice set/workbook. All may be purchased
from the MBA.
