Elder Financial Abuse is growing faster than ever, with new scams popping up daily around the COVID-19 virus as our nation contends with this pandemic.  Seniors citizens are already being affected disproportionately in many ways. The banking community is reaching out to their local areas to see what they can do to help right now.

This presentation will familiarize you on:

  • Types of financial abuse, common scams and schemes
  • How it occurs
  • Who are likely targets, and also likely abusers
  • Warning signs that a senior may be getting financially exploited
  • Tactics to help seniors avoid this type of fraud
  • And what to do and where to report it if it does happen

Our worlds have been substantially changed, not interrupted, but fundamentally changed, and that requires a new orientation of both processes and skills.  Our old-world way of delivering great customer service, while also addressing sales needs is not enough.  In this session we will review the fundamentals of a strong sales and service culture and how the experience of the last year (or more) demands a refocus, and enhancement of the systems we have in place.

Speakers:

Steve Chiavarone is responsible for portfolio management and research in the global asset allocation area and is a portfolio manager of Federated Hermes Global Allocation Fund. Steve is responsible for the formulation of Federated Hermes’ views on the economy, the financial markets and the firm’s investment positioning strategies as a member of both the Macro Economic Policy and the PRISM Asset Allocation committees. Steve is also responsible for bringing macroeconomic, investment strategy and product knowledge directly to clients in collaboration with the sales team.

Richard (Rick) Courtney has practiced law since 1978 and is a founding partner of the Jackson law firm of Frascogna Courtney, PLLC, where he chairs the Courtney Elder Law Associates planning group.  His primary areas of practice are elder law, public benefits law (Medicaid, Medicare and SSI), personal asset protection and estate planning, trusts and trust administration, special needs planning for persons with disabilities, guardianships and conservatorships, nursing home and disability rights, and probate administration.  Rick is the first attorney in Mississippi designated a Certified Elder Law Attorney by the American Bar Association-accredited National Elder Law Foundation.  He is a former Assistant Dean and Adjunct Professor of Law at Mississippi College School of Law and Adjunct Professor – Skills Fellow at University of Mississippi Law School of Law.  Rick is a former Director of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) where he serves on the Trusts and Special Needs Law Sections Steering Committees; the Probate and Trust Law Section of the American Bar Association; the Trusts and Estates Section of the Mississippi State Bar (former Chair); the Mississippi Estate Planning Council; the Mississippi Financial Planning Association; and the Special Needs Alliance, Inc., a national organization of special needs planning attorneys (former President). 

Michael Dixon has worked with Pohl Consulting and Training for more than 20 years, as a Consultant and industry resource partner.  He has a broad background in Professional Sales and Sales Management and is adept at developing integrated sales and service leadership models; as well as Wealth Management product design and service delivery systems.  

Clients benefit from Michael’s broad experience gained as a consultant, as well as his work leading a Community Bank Wealth Management Group. His time ‘in the field’ provided real world lessons and demonstrated results of both top and bottom line growth as well as team leadership skills.   

Shea Gabrielleschi is Vice President and Southeast Regional Representative for CRA Partners and the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to protect vulnerable seniors from elder abuse and exploitation through funding from local community banks. Shea joined CRA Partners in 2015 and currently develops and cultivates relationships with current and potential bank partners throughout the Southeast. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi.

Samantha Moore is a member of Butler Snow’s Business Services group and focuses her practice on estate and trust planning, estate administration and general taxation law. She has been recognized as Rising Star in estate planning and probate by Mid-South Super Lawyers®, as well as by Best Lawyers in America® for tax law. She is currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Estate Planning Council of Mississippi and the Executive Committee of the Estates and Trusts Section of the Mississippi Bar Association. Samantha is a Certified Public Accountant who has served in many positions with the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants, including Secretary, Millennial Chair of the Taxation Committee and President of the Central Chapter. She was recently elected a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

Phoebe Papageorgiou is Vice President at the American Bankers Association. In this role, she oversees the advocacy efforts of the ABA’s Trust Counsel Committee, Trust Taxation Committee, IRA Steering Committee, and Collective Funds Task Force. Her portfolio includes issues related to trust and wealth management services, fiduciary regulations and duties, tax reporting and preparation, investments, and bank custody services.  Prior to joining ABA in 2005, Phoebe worked for the U.S. Department of the Treasury in the Office of Domestic Finance. She received her law degree from The George Washington University Law School and her undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Michael Schloegel is the Mississippi Pine Belt Market President for Hancock Whitney Bank.  He boasts a twenty-three-year career with Hancock Whitney, eighteen of those focused in Commercial Banking along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking and Finance from the University of Mississippi and did his graduate work with the School of Banking at Louisiana State University.  He also completed courses with the Mississippi School of Banking established by the Mississippi Bankers Association.  He was chosen by the Governor to represent the Southern District of Mississippi and the Banking and Financial Industry on the Mississippi ABLE Board.  He has also served as a Board Member for the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plan, Completed the Master’s Leadership Program with the Gulf Coast Business Council, Served on the Legislative Committee of the Mississippi Bankers Association, is a Past-President of the Mississippi Young Bankers, a Graduate of Leadership Gulf Coast and a recipient of One Coast Awards Top 10 Community Leaders Under 40. 

Billy Taylor has served as the Chief of Staff at the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services since 2015. Prior to his role with MDRS, Billy served as a Special Assistant Attorney General with Mississippi’s Attorney General’s Office, where he represented various State Agencies. He is a graduate of Mississippi College School of Law and hold a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University.
